âEden! Let down your hair.â The sun was beginning to close in on high noon and the sky was clear, making me squint up at the sun as Eden took her time coming to the window. âEden! Your hair! Let it down!â
Where was that loathsome creature? Heaven help me put up with her until I could locate the correct Danville boy to pair her with. Once found, heâd suffer by his Princessâs side. Sheâd suffer for making me spend almost eighteen years of my life taking care of her disgusting self.
Blonde locks of hair came out of the window and I closed my mouth. Iâd been about to yell for her again. I was on a mission and the girl was slowing it down.
The magic inside me reacted to the girlâs hair and gave me the strength I needed to climb. Eighteen years ago, I hadnât been forced to use as much magic to climb the hair. Now, however, it was all I could do to not allow the slippery, thin strands to slip through my fingers. My fingers had weakened over time and I could no longer keep a firm grasp, even around my morning coffee cup.
Eden looked pale and sickly when I stood erect in her room. She fidgeted with her fingers and her gaze stayed mostly on the floor. Her eyes appeared swollen and her nose red. If I were a betting woman, Iâd say Eden was hiding something, and I had a feeling I knew what it was as I walked past her and touched the door handle leading out of her apartment.
âOh dear, Iâm so sorry. I forgot to lock the door so youâd be safe.â How could she still believe that little lie? Eden was so gullible and had been all her life. âYou must have been so scared.â
"Actually, Gwenda, I had no idea it wasn't locked." The girl stared at the floor, a clear sign of her lie. "I'm sorry for my appearance. I had a nightmare last night, and it has haunted me since."
Now, that may have been true. From her haggard appearance, it likely was. However, that did not mean she hadn't been to the basement or elsewhere snooping around. I'd have to talk to the kids to find out for sure.
"Why don't you rest, Eden. I need to leave again soon, so I will be back."
"Yes, ma'am." She hesitated, mouth opening and then closing again before she gathered courage to speak to me. Eden was never afraid of me, but I could almost smell the fear on her now. âCould I maybe wear my necklace to help regain some of my energy. Iâve been feeling sluggish.â
Of course, Eden wanted her necklace. She couldn't run though. So, I reached into my pocket, and, with a smile, I held the ribbon band out to her. On the end hung the old key, a skeleton key, which marked her as the Princess, and leader, of the Cato clan. Their old leader had lost his head the day the necklace chose to belong to someone else, a squishy baby, nonetheless.
